What are complementary colours?
Complementary colours sit opposite each other on the colour wheel — for example blue and orange, or purple and yellow. Because they are as far apart as hues can be, they create maximum contrast. Each makes the other look more vivid, and pairing a warm colour with a cool one often feels balanced to the eye.
How to use them well:
- 60-30-10: let one colour dominate (~60%), a second support (~30%), and keep the complementary as a clear accent (~10%).
- Mute one side: a dusty or desaturated partner photographs more gently than two full-strength brights fighting for attention.
- One accent is enough: flowers, a tie, a cushion, or a feature wall — not every surface.

Complementary pairings
Combinations that photograph beautifully
Three complementary (or near-complementary) pairings tailored to bridesmaid dresses and WA settings.
Dusty blue + terracotta
Cool blue dresses with warm terracotta bouquets or ties. Beautiful at Fremantle brick and limestone, and balanced in bright midday sun.
Sage + blush / mauve
Soft green and dusty pink sit near-complementary and feel romantic without neon. Ideal for Swan Valley vines and Kings Park bushland.
Navy + champagne gold
Deep navy with soft metallic gold reads elegant at dusk receptions and city terraces. Keep the gold muted so it doesn’t glare on camera.

Complementary pairings
Combinations that lift a listing
Three complementary pairings sized for rooms and listing photography — contrast without clutter.
Navy + warm timber / tan
A navy feature or joinery against warm timber flooring or tan soft furnishings. Strong contrast that still feels lived-in on portal thumbnails.
Soft eucalyptus + clay
Sage walls with a clay or terracotta accent cushion or art. Suits character homes and hills listings; keep clay to accents so rooms stay light.
Cool grey + warm brass
Warm-undertone greys with brass handles or a single lamp. Softens contemporary apartments without adding colour casts across the frame.
